National Service Scheme - AVIT
Motto : " Not me, but you"
In the National Policy on Education (1968) it was stated that work experience and national service, including participation in meaningful and challenging programmes of community service and national reconstruction, should become an integral part of education, emphasis being made on self help, character formation and on developing a sense of social commitment. The National Service Volunteer is envisaged as a social engineer, one who strives to discover his creative potential and gain a deep and critical insight into the issues involved in the process of development, and who is willing to commit all his energy in the service of the community and the country.
Working for and with the community, understanding the problems of real-life and utilizing their skills and knowledge in solving those problems enrich the experience of the students and has tremendous value in their preparation for the responsibilities of life.
The NSS provides the youth, during this interregnum, avenues for indulging in creative and constructive work suited to their educational background and aptitude.
Mahatma Gandhi’s suggestion was that the first duty of students should be one where they do not treat the period of study as one of the opportunities for indulgence in intellectual luxury but rather one preparing them for dedication in services. In doing so they would be working towards the upliftment of the villagers to a higher material and moral level.

The NSS symbol is based on the “Rath Wheel” of the Konark Sun Temple of Orissa. The giant wheel portrays the cycles of creation, preservation and release, and signifies the movement in life across time and space. The design of the symbol, a simplified form of Sun Chariot Wheel primarily depicts movement. The wheel signifies the progressive cycle of life. It also stands for dynamism and the progressive outlook of youth.

NSS @ AVIT
The National Service Scheme, AVIT, Paiyanoor, was formed in 1998 under the University of Madras and it later came under Anna University, Chennai. In the year 2004 the NSS unit of AVIT was brought under the Vinayaka Missions University, Salem. In the year 2007 the University approved 3 units for the AVIT campus. Since then, the students of our college have been rendering valuable voluntary services to the society through various social welfare projects.
The basic aim of such activities of the students is to work for the cause of the poor and to help foster the development of a spirit of socio-cultural interaction and service among students and people from other walks of life. The principle emphasis is on the fact that true education can be deemed complete only when the student’s commitment to the society is fulfilled in terms of voluntary services for the betterment of the common man. At the same time, it has played the important role of introducing slow but concrete reforms in the slum and downtrodden areas in the locality near the campus. With the progress of time, the activities of the unit diversified and the area broadened. More emphasis was now laid on special camps and normal programmes involving interaction of other welfare bodies/ institutes.
Adding to the years in its programmes, the NSS unit has successfully organized various camps, awareness drives and medical checkup camps along with charity sales, and has always been an integral part of the co-curricular programmes of the college campus. But it is keenly felt that services cannot be rendered effectively and efficiently without the cooperation, guidance and blessings of the local civilians and other authorities, welfare organizations and other responsible and rational persons of society. Therefore, we appeal to all people having an inclination towards social work for their involvement in strengthening the present work force in continuing the work in pursuit of the noble cause.
Under the guidance of our esteemed Chancellor – Dr. A. S. Ganesan, Principal – Dr.G.Selvakumar and Program Coordinator – Dr. P. Selvam, the unit is constantly striving to attain new heights believing in the fact that ” We can and we will make a difference “.
